Meet Chimp Billi

Chimp Billi at Ngamba Island sanctuary

Hello,

Billi is a female chimpanzee who came from DRC and is estimated to have been born early in 1998. She was confiscated from Arua and arrived at Ngamba on 18th February 2001. She is a tall average sized juvenile chimp with a bald patch and a well-defined ridge above her eye brows. She was named Billi after the town in DRC in which she is presumed to have come from.

She’s one of the low ranking young adult females with a very good appetite and her weight has increased. She has improved in rank since the integration of the four chimpanzees that were rescued from South Sudan and commands respect from the adult females like Connie and Becky.

Bili still cares for Afrika and supports her in case of any attempted attack from the other chimps. I loves to nest in the forest and even when she returns to the holding, she is among the last individuals to enter. Most times she avoids the big group and isolates herself with company of a few low ranking chimps especially Afrika. During feeding, she prefers to sit at the back towards the bushes.

We stayed on Ngamba Island for an overnight experience, acted as caregivers for the day back in 2009.
The experience was out of this world, meting our cousins up close and personal. The most memorable things I remember were poor tiny Afrika had a cold, this highlighted to me just how similar we are. The second and amazing experience was the forest walk, where we took a small group of femails and youngsters out in the forest to play. At the time we were told that Billi was lazy and looked to be carried by what she thought was the fittest person in the group. She certainly did enjoy being carried, I spent the best part of an hour carrying Billi through the forest, an experience I will never forget. Tell me, has she grown up yet? Finally if any people read this that need any help to decide whether to go or not, the whole day was amazing, the staff, the care they give and the chimps, and the night, the noise of the wildlife on the island and the noise the chimps made at daybreak was the loudest alarm clock I have ever heard.
