Afrika
Est. Date of Birth 2007
Female
My name is Afrika and I arrived at Ngamba in June 2008. Before I was rescued by UWA rangers, I was confined to a small cage and lived on a diet of bananas and popcorn. Since arriving at Ngamba I live with the other chimps and am a real favorite with the juvenile females who often like to fight for my attention. For this reason, I am affectionately nicknamed “Cutie“.
My Story
Afrika
I was taken to Ngamba Island when I was only five years old in 2008, I’m now a mother. My name is Afrika and I am 13 years old now and mother to the adorable baby boy, Survivor who is famously known as ‘Afrika’s son’.
If you had told me in 2008 that in 2015 I would be a mother, I would have said, get out of here but I am. That’s how life changed for me at Ngamba Island.
I was confiscated from Kashoya, Kitomi Forest Reserve and taken to Ngamba on 18th June 2008 where I found a wonderful Chimp female Billi, who adopted me and raised me like her own daughter. I don’t know who my mother was nor do I know who my father was that’s why when I think of the privilege Survivor has, I sometimes envy him.
H e knows his mother and father but most importantly he was born in a place where they understand our kind. In Kashoya, Katomi forest reserve where I was found, nobody cared about Chimpanzee welfare least our existence.
I just can’t wait to introduce him to my adoptive mother who will be his grandmother and the rest of the Chimp family and his father. He has a half full family this one, but it’s better than being an orphan.
If you are interested in knowing more about my family find us at Ngamba Island.
