Bahati
Est. Date of Birth 1990
Female
My name is Bahati which means ‘luck’ in Swahili and I arrived at Ngamba in 1998. I love spending time with the younger chimps and enjoy a relatively high rank. I’m very smart and when the caregivers try and hide medication in my food I can always smell it and will reject the food. I’m scared of water so I never go into the lake but like to watch the other chimps playing in the water.
My Story
Bahati
My name is Bahati, in English you can call me Lucky, I was born in 1990 and I’ve lived at Ngamba Island since 1998. I was confiscated from Kibale in Western Uganda where I was living in captivity.
Overall I can say my life at Ngamba Island has been relatively good, only problem is, I haven’t gone on estrous since 2003. I’m like any other woman I crave male attention but without being on estrous, in my community I can’t be recognized by the males.
That feels like another form of captivity for me, being that I get to see other female Chimpanzees go on estrous several times a year without fail and get all the favours the male Chimpanzees are willing to offer, that alone makes me jealous.
Sometimes I feel like an outcaste in my community especially when I see young Chimpanzees like Kyewunyo getting more respect in my community than I do simply because they go on estrous.
This situation has affected me a lot including reducing my rank in my community irrespective of my age. I guess us girls have similar problems irrespective of where we come from.
Do you have some advice on how I can get back on estrous, find me at Ngamba Island?
