Cocoa
Est. Date of Birth 2009
Female
Arrival at UWEC: 6th July 2011
Arrival at Ngamba: 2nd March 2012
Her name is Cocoa. She is a well built female chimp with a black mark on the face, which makes it easy for people to identify her from the rest. At the time of her arrival, she was in a fairly good condition compared to her other companions.
She is a very active chimp but during feeding, she is often bullied by the high ranking chimpanzees. Being an intelligent chimp, Cocoa discovered the ways of getting more food without much struggle by always keeping a distance from the big chimpanzees. After gathering enough, she quickly belly pockets her food and sits under the shed where she enjoys comfortably.
Cocoa does not entirely trust people and when she is approached, she tries to poke the person.
My Story
Cocoa (Profile of a shy Chimp)
Do you think you are the only shy person that’s ever lived on planet earth, wait until you meet me? My name is Cocoa and I am by far the shiest Chimpanzee that has ever lived at Ngamba Island.
I don’t know about you but when people come to visit and insist on seeing me, I just want to hide very far from them but as you know with all relatives they like to greet and get concerned about your wellbeing.
That’s what happens to me every time my 98.7% brother’s and sister’s visit. They want to see me, take pictures around me or even try and touch me.
When they insist, I always try my best but usually I fail and all I can do is poke their faces and run off or climb up high in the trees or the holding facility where I feel safe and out of reach
…and there you thought Facebook was the only place where people poked each other in 2010, well welcome to my world!
Whenever you are in the mood for a simple poke, you can always find me at Ngamba Island.
