Indi
Est. Date of Birth 1999
Male
My name is Indi and I arrived at Ngamba in 2000. I earned my name for showing strong independence within minutes of my arrival. I’m easy to identify because I’ve got a big scar over my left eye. I’m very curious, love to explore and have lots of friends.
My Story
Indi (Profile of Ngamba Islands Independent Chimp)
It took Uganda nearly 70 years to get its independence but not me; it only took taking me to the right environment for me to gain my Independence.
My name is Indi and I am the only Chimpanzee at Ngamba Island who was named after his character. When I was confiscated and taken to Ngamba Island, I exhibited Independence from the start.
The care givers tried to pair me up with other Chimpanzees during integration but I preferred to feed a lone and spend most of my time on my own which was quite unusual for a newly confiscated Chimpanzee hence the name Independent which was later shortened to Indi but if you like you can call me Independent.
I’ve been alive for 17 years and most of them have been a real Joy to me, reason being, I have not been living in captivity for 16 years out of the 17.
I was confiscated from Arua and arrived at Ngamba Island on 8th December 2000. That was the best day of my life; In fact I consider it to be my birthday although I was born in 1999.
So here is to all the 2000 babies who were born on 8th December, the day you were born changed my life. I look forward to seeing all of you at Ngamba Island.
Or better yet when you come by, we can celebrate our birthday together, it would really be awesome.
