Kidogo
Est. Date of Birth 1984
Female
My name is Kidogo and I arrived at Ngamba in 1998. Even though my name means ‘small’ in Swahili I am actually the largest female on the island. I am also one of the most dominant females and use my rank to challenge the males and steal food from other females. The caregivers like to say I walk like a boss.
My Story
Kidogo (Profile of the Alpha Female of Ngamba Island)
I am the matriarch of Ngamba Island what they commonly call alpha female round here but it wasn’t always like this. I came in as a very small Chimpanzee hence the name Kidogo which means small in Swahili.
Now I’m not so small since most people say I’m big and built as a gorilla. But you have to trust me I am a chimp and I am still called small one. Isn’t that funny!
Anyway I was born in 1984 and arrived at Ngamba Island in October 1998. I’ve lived here for 18 years now and I am happy. Really happy because when I stand in the forest, after all these years what I see here is a very different from what I saw in Russia when we were illegally exported to take part in the Russian circus.
It was hard for us but Sunday had it worse. To this day we all can’t believe we survived Russia but we did. I’m glad Uganda didn’t give up on us and because of that we have a safe place to call home at Ngamba Island.
Do you want to come and see it for yourself? Find us at Ngamba Island.
