My name is Kikyo and I arrived at Ngamba as a young boy in 2006. I like to spend my days in the forest challenging some of the females and even though I am smaller for a male I have a big temper!

My Story

Kikyo

I was a pant hooting doting baby chimp who insisted on being carried to the forest all the time. Mama Chimp Becky did her best to make it happen for me a lot as a child but as I grew older she stopped.

Now I am a man, with ambitions of my own and a lifetime ahead of me but my life didn’t start at Ngamba Island. I was confiscated from Ruwenzori National Park in Bundibugyo Western Uganda and taken to Ngamba Island on 23rd August 2006.

I was barely three years old then, an orphan with no one to turn to or take care of but one day I was taken to Ngamba Island and the moment I looked at Chimp Mama Becky, my life changed. She wanted me! But most of all she wanted for good.

That’s how I was adopted, right there in the holding facility she was sure and never asked for anyone’s approval to take me in. She introduced me to Aunty Sally, Nagoti and Bahati.

They’ve all been good to me and actively contributed to my upbringing. I’m 12 years now and what I love most about being a Chimpanzee is being able to charge at other Chimpanzees. Especially when I’m around female Chimpanzees, you can call me a show off? But then again we’ve all been teenagers before…haven’t we?

I guess I should enjoy it while it lasts and if you are out there and want to be charged at, find me at Ngamba Island.
