Kisembo

Est. Date of Birth 1999

Male

My name is Kisembo and I arrived at Ngamba in 2000 after being confiscated from the back of a bicycle! Even though I am not a large male, I like to throw my weight around and will sometimes pick on the females. I like to play with my caregivers by taking a long time to leave the holding facility in the mornings.

My Story

Kisembo (Profile of Ngamba Islands displaying Chimpanzee)

I’m a smart guy, I’m stubborn, I’m confident and I’m among the high ranking males at Ngamba Island.

My name is Kisembo and I am all the above.

I enjoy attacking the Alpha male in my free time, for me it’s not really about power play but power display. I spend long days jumping from one tree to another, somersaulting around the feeding area and climbing tree trunks at supersonic speed.

It’s only fair that I try my new skills on a Chimpanzee that is deemed to be the strongest in the batch. That’s why I always pick Umutama. His, a big guy, wide chest, you can easily mistake him for a Gorilla but hey his, a Chimpanzee.

In the holding facility there is a guy named Mawa, his smart but also strong. I like to display my strength every time I meet him unlike other chimpanzees that fear him.

You could say I am Ngamba Islands displaying Chimpanzee but that’s not how I was in 1999. I was confiscated in Arua at the back of a bicycle as I was being transported to a house of a Ugandan housewife who had purchased me.

Back then I couldn’t even break out of that papyrus basket they had put me in. I was young, weak and frail I couldn’t even pant hoot. To this day I’m so glad Uganda Wildlife Authority found me before I was turned into a Pet.

If you know any Chimpanzees that are living in captivity, don’t hesitate to reach Ngamba Island.

We have a home here.
