Kyewunyo

July 1, 2002

Female

My name is Kyewunyo and means ‘surprise’ in Lugandan. I was born on Ngamba in 2002. My mother is Katie and my father is Robbie. I am very close to Connie and Peace and much to my surprise, I gave birth to a baby girl in 2016! We named her ‘Kyewunyo Kyewunyo’ or ‘Surprise Surprise’ since of course, we were both quite a surprise to our human caregivers!

My Story

Kyewunyo (The Privileged Children of Ngamba Island)

Earlier on I knew I was a Chimp, on Ngamba Island trees clasping my mother’s waist. No Chimpanzee whimpered better when left in the nest. I used to try and jump like Mama Katie, pant hoot louder like Papa Robbie.

My life is a blessing, I’ve had it better. I will never know how horrible pet trade is or what walking about in the forest and falling in a poacher’s snare is.

Looking back on 1st July 2002 every Chimp at the Island knew I was coming, auntie Chimp Natasha kept on checking my mother’s opening to see how far my head had come, while Papa Robbie clasped his hands together hoping for a safe delivery and  in the ….hours I was born.

The first Chimpanzee to ever be born on Ngamba Island, my name is Surprise which is directly translated in luganda as Kyewunyo. That is what I did to the Care-givers; I surprised them with my birth and currently at 14 years old, I have a baby of my own too.

I was born to the first family of Ngamba Island, my father Robbie was the alpha male at the time and my mother Katie was his first lady. That makes me the first daughter and my baby is the first grandchild.

If you’re interested in rubbing shoulders with the most influential families in the world, find us at Ngamba Island.
