Survivor
Est. Date of Birth 27th March 2015
Female
My name is Survivor. When most mother’s give birth prematurely, their biggest fear is whether or not there baby will survive. That was my mother’s fear too, wrapped in a heavily hayed hammock, my mother did her best to keep me warm throughout the night away from other female Chimpanzee’s but it was impossible.
My Story
Survivor (the privileged children of Ngamba Island)
She was only 12 when she had me and didn’t know much about child birth so Auntie Chimp Connie came to help her detach me from her by biting the umbilical code.
She later took me away and cleaned me up with her tongue which sparked a fight between Pasa, Nagoti and her on who should carry me first. That fight led to a fracture of my bone which forced the caregivers to tranquilize my mother and took me to the veterinary clinic for further examination.
My name is survivor and I am the second Chimpanzee to be born at Ngamba Island. I was born to Mama Chimp Afrika on 27th March 2015. I defied the odds for her; my bones are stronger than ever now and I am one year old now. I survived prematurity that’s why the care givers named me survivor.
I guess they would have also named me Surprise since my birth too was a surprise, but surprise was already taken. Anyway if you are interested in knowing more about taking care of a premature Chimpanzee, find me at Ngamba Island and we talk about all the things that I was fed to grow into this strong and healthy one year old.
