Nani
Est. Date of birth 2001
Female
My name is Nani and I arrived at Ngamba in 2002. I’m originally from Congo but was rescued in Tanzania. My name means ‘who’ in Swahili because the Tanzanian caregivers had never seen a baby chimp before and wondered ‘who’ I was! I love being out in the forest and am often the first one to run out in the mornings. I’m also quite friendly with all the males so I’m rarely the focus of their aggression which can be so common in our group social dynamics.
My Story
Nani‘s Profile
Nani wuyo, he asked. I looked up with my big brown eyes. He looked back and called out, Nani?
Excuse my Swahili but I honestly believed that was my name. You see I’m a girl the Swahili speakers call “WHO” that is the meaning of my name.
It is a weird one, I know. But I was confiscated in Tanzania and the care givers who took care of me at the time had never encountered a baby Chimp before so they kept on inquiring who I was hence the name Nani.
I was born in 2001 and as you can see I’ve been around for quite some time now. I am a 15 year old chimp that originated from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
But on arrival at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre on 18th June 2002 I was just one year old and in need of rehabilitation.
At Uganda wildlife Education Centre I was put under the care of caregivers who understood my kind hence I was put under quarantine for 6 months before being moved to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary where I met other Chimps who have become my family.
These days I’m bigger than that scared little baby chimp. If you are interested in seeing my progress, you can call this Reservation number (256758221880) and make an appointment.
My friends and I will be glad to meet you.
