ENHANCING THE READING CULTURE IN CHILDREN

The Chimpanzee Trust in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) and Books for Development launched the mobile library in schools around Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria Uganda. The main goal for this launch was to expand access to reading books in the underprivileged communities, of which Koome Island is part.
Five schools are the beneficiaries of this project including; Myende community school, Buyana RC Primary School, Koome Church of Uganda Primary School and Damba Parents Primary school.
This initiative of the mobile library is geared to fill the gap of children not being able to go to school for now 19 months but rather have the reading books to keep them engaged until when they can resume school. The use of the library is designed such that the books are rotated amongst the schools for select periods to ensure that all the schools and the children in the schools have access to these books continuously. The Trust, through the administration of the sanctuary, will monitor the transfer of the library from one school to the next and the use of the books at each school, determining preferences, to advise future book needs.
Thanks to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre; https://uwec.ug/, Books for Development; https://www.booksfordevelopment.com/, for this partnership and innovation.
